"Bais": is a nickname that dates back to the 18th century. The versatile Rocco Giordano, astute and farsighted entrepreneur from Scilla inherited it with pride from his own ancestor Antonio, himself was a wealthy land owner in his day, who was remembered as being a man who paid his employees in kind that had been equally and properly weighed out, or “basato”.

U Bais, a dialect version of “basato” became a synonymous term for a person who is “fair”. A concept that Rocco Giordano – the “U Bais” – understood perfectly and applied directly when managing his renowned restaurants " Grotta Azzurra - U Bais " and " Il Pirata - U Bais " ; as well as the elegant restaurant-suites “ Principe di Scilla ” which is located, as the name implies, right on the sea.

Prestigious clientele, including famous world-renowned personalities from the fields of entertainment, culture, authority, politics and gourmet professions, all come to the “U Bais” to enjoy his delicious seafood specialties over and over again; not to mention Giordano's proverbial hospitality.

Right in the heart of the picturesque ancient town of Chianalea, the
“Principe di Scilla” was reconstructed on the site of what was once, in 1533, the magnificent old family residence of the De Nava family, which later became that of Ruffo di Calabria.

Later, the palatial building became the property of the Zagari family and was called the "Scategna" which was a nickname given to the owner who had attended the "Scategna" school in Napoli. Even today, the charm and atmosphere of the old noble private residence remains much the way it was years ago.
